Students follow a two year Key Stage 3 curriculum in Art. We begin with studying the formal elements of art therefore equipping students early on with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. Students are introduced to several modern and relevant artists as well as art movements throughout history and are encouraged to analyse and imitate art techniques in their own work. As art students progress on to the three year GCSE course at the beginning of year 9, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design.
Key Stage 3
In year 7 we begin with the elements of art such as line, shape, tone, texture and colour. We study sweet treats as a theme which allows us to explore the elements of art really closely as, afterall, which year 7 doesn't love sweet treats such as sweets, cakes, doughnuts, ice creams and biscuits. We begin to look at the design in everyday things items in the world around us and in our own homes so that students can begin to appreciate art all around. We study a selection of artists such as Romero Britto, Sarah Graham, Andy Warhol and encourage students to critique and enjoy different techniques and styles of art when developing their own style.
In year 8 we begin to embed and develop skills and techniques learnt in the context of Portraits and Identity for the first term, moving on to Surrealism Figures, Fantasy Creatures and Masks from around the world. Students use a variety of techniques including pencil drawing, wire sculptures, mixed media collage, Photoshop and model making . Artists that we study include Alexander Calder, Kehinde Wiley, David Hockney, Picasso, Tim Burton and Max Ernst to broaden their knowledge and understanding of traditional and contemporary artists.
Key Stage 4
In Year 9 we begin the GCSE course where we closely follow the GCSE Assessment Objectives for Art & Design courses. Students learn how to research, present ideas, develop and refine their own ideas and produce a final piece of art work. We encourage them to understand sketch-booking and the creativity that goes in to producing a journey of work. We begin the first half term with skills-based workshops so that students can build on and develop their competency in a range of media. This equips the students with a wealthy foundation of creative processes early on. The topic we study initially is Identity and Surroundings through to Story Telling so that students can begin to apply their art, craft and design skills in the contexts of their own interests, values and opinions. Photography, print, digital editing, collage, acrylic and watercolour painting are just some of the media that students will use culminating in a term of ceramics at the end of year 9 where students have the opportunity to use the new kiln facilities.
At this stage of their art education, students will recall, refine and develop a range of skills including drawing, painting, photography, collage, digital media, printing, 3D modelling and critical artist research. The chosen theme for Year 10 is Contemporary Still Life where we encourage students to explore their world around them and the things that matter to them. This allows for a broad range of talents and skills to be developed as we encourage independence and resilience as a part of their creative expression. In Year 11 we explore 3D elements towards their art portfolio while studying the theme of Natural versus Man-made. Every year students enjoy the opportunity for individual choice and interpretation in this broad theme which always gets debate and discussion going as students find that their values and beliefs can be expressed in a creative forum.
GCSE students apply their skills to meet the 4 Assessment Objectives required in this AQA Art, Craft and Design Course. These encompass Recording and Presenting Ideas; Developing Ideas; Refining and Experimenting; Presenting Final Ideas in the form of sketchbooks, digital files and final pieces.
