District Cricket Champions

On Tuesday 2nd July the Year 9 boys cricket team travelled to Shepperton Cricket Club to defend their district cricket title against Thamesmead, a replay of last year's final.

Having won the toss Ishaan decided to  bowl first. Dan and Ishaan took the new ball between them hoping to make early inroads into the Thamesmead batting line-up, but a strong start from the two Thamesmead openers meant that they raced out to 30 for no loss at the end of just the third over. An inspired bowling change led to Bradley taking a wicket with his very first ball of the match in the fourth over, looking like it might give MA some control. Thamesmead continued at a decent pace however, aided by some inauspicious bowling. The remaining Thamesmead opening batsman in particular was striking the ball well, finding the boundary regularly. When he was eventually forced to retire having made 30 the scoring rate climbed again. Thamesmead's numbers 3 and 4 scored freely, with their number 4 striking a 6 and four 4s in an entertaining knock. Thamesmead finished their 15 overs on what looked to be a strong 122-1.

With some strong words of encouragement from Mr Saunders at the interval, Dan and Frankie walked out to start what would be a very good chase. Frankie wasted no time at all at getting stuck in smashing a 6 from just the second ball of the innings. He perished soon after though, chipping a return catch to the bowler. Ishaan joined Dan at the crease, tension starting to appear on the faces of some on the sidelines. That tension soon abated with both Ishaan and Dan batting assuredly. Four 6s and two 4s took Ishaan to a rapid 33, bringing Bradley out to the middle to continue the chase. A boundary from his first ball faced brought smiles to the faces of those looking on, and from there on in Matthew Arnold looked serene. Dan clubbed some ferocious shots to the rope with ease to match Ishaan's 33. Luka faced just one ball but that no ball was enough to bring MA a very comfortable victory, reaching their target with several overs remaining.

This means the boys are now 3x District champions, and are unbeaten in their 3 years at Matthew Arnold!

Massive congratulations!

Mr Belcher & Mr Saunders
