Year 8 Careers Day

Year 8 Careers Day at The Matthew Arnold School

On Thursday 23rd February we held a careers day for year 8. The aim was to give our students independent advice and guidance and ensure that they were inspired and motivated and have the right tools to be able to fulfil their potential. We want to help every student to develop high aspirations and consider a range of careers. Our intention is for all of our students to leave here as well rounded young people ready for the next step.

As we wanted to guarantee this was independent advice we were delighted that once again we had people from the local community that also wanted to help us achieve our goal. With the help of these people we were able to offer our students a really varied and thought-provoking day.

Strode’s College delivered a challenging activity where the students had to work together and use their problem-solving skills. The students were also given information on the importance of becoming an independent learner and an overview of college life and information about A level study. This was a lovely opportunity for our year 8 students to work with Strode’s College again and develop their team-working skills.

Brooklands College educated the students on BTEC study, traineeships, apprenticeships and vocational courses. The students took part in a quiz at the end of this session and the retention of information was, once again, very impressive. Brooklands college have worked with us on many other projects but this was the first time year 8 have had the opportunity.

Innervate Careers delivered three sessions to our students; these sessions were intended to both inform and inspire our students. One exercise was working out a budget - our year 8 students were very surprised to see how their parents had to balance the books each month and it gave them good insight in to the need to work hard now for a brighter future. Together, they looked at:

  • The decision-making process
  • Where will I be in the year 2030?
  • Careers research & labour market information & employability skills

I am sure that the students gained a great deal from the day; I have included a couple of photographs for you to enjoy.
