- Year 8 Options Process 2022
This term marks the start of the GCSE options process for our year 8 students. It is an important time for our students and we have taken the decision to proceed during the current lockdown. Students will follow a clear plan to help them determine the best combination of subjects to take at GCSE, whilst at the same time ensuring that their curriculum experience at school is broad, balanced and enjoyable.

How the options process works at The Matthew Arnold School
Students at The Matthew Arnold School choose their GCSE options when they are in Year 8, meaning that they begin Key Stage 4 in Year 9. We offer a comprehensive guidance process to students and parents. This process will start towards the end of the autumn term, when full information will be sent out and posted here.
All students study a core curriculum of GCSE English Language and Literature, Mathematics, Science and Philosophy and Ethics.
In addition to the core subjects we want our students to complete a health, sport and nutrition course (GCSE PE, WJEC L1/L2 Hospitality and Catering, or BTEC Health and Social Care) and an EBacc subject (Computing, French, Geography, History, Separate Sciences or Spanish)
Students then choose a further three GCSEs from the list below:
- Art and Design
- Business Studies
- Computing
- Drama
- Design and Technology
- French
- Geography
- Health and Social Care
- History
- Hospitality and Catering
- Music
- Religious Studies
- Separate Sciences
- Sociology
- Spanish
- Textiles
