Background
The Matthew Arnold School, a High Performing School, is a mixed comprehensive, community, secondary school. It came into being in 1975 by the amalgamation of the former boys’ and girls’ schools opened in 1947. The school offers a high standard of secondary education to pupils between the ages of 11 and 16 in Staines. Pupils come from most primary schools in the Spelthorne area. Mr Nicol, Headteacher, joined the school in April 2013. The school was delighted to be awarded Specialist Status for Business & Enterprise in September 2004. The school had Artsmark Gold for many years and still retains the Artsmark. In a similar way we have held the Sportsmark for obver twelve years. In 2006 we were one of the top 100 improved schools at KS3. In January 2008 the school was acclaimed as “the most improved school 2004-2007”. Ofsted 2008 judged the school as good overall with outstanding features.
In recognition of being a “High Performing Specialist School”, we gained a second specialism. We chose Applied Learning with a Gifted and Talented focus. One of our business partners, BAA gave us £100,000 towards to create a centre of excellence. We have use these funds to build new accomodation and now work in partnership with Strode's sixth form college to offer post 16 education on our site. This take the form of a football academy running in conjunction with Chelsea Football Foundation. This is an exciting time to join our school.
Admissions procedures are detailed in the prospectus. There are just under 1000 children on roll and about 25% on the Special Needs Code of Practice. There are approximately 125 members of teaching and support staff. The number on roll enables us to offer and maintain a broad curriculum and ensure a high quality of education. We have been oversubscribed for Year 7 since 2002 and anticipate this continuing as there is strong parental support for the school.
Business & Enterprise Specialist status was chosen to enhance achievement and facilities in the core curriculum. Maths, ICT, Business and Lifeskills are our specialist subjects. Investment in ICT and professional development obviously enhances all areas of the school. Enterprise activities are used to underpin the school ethos and inspire student involvement in school activities. In this way we develop further the excellent provision in areas such as the Arts and Sport as well as our specialist subjects.
The Business & Enterprise College is supported by the community and in particular by: Enterprise Rent-a-Car, Lifestyle Fitness, Spelthorne Borough Council, BP, McDonalds and A2 Housing.
