Overview

All Key Stage three students participate in a one hour dance class a week at The Matthew Arnold School. The Dance lessons encourages to develop students’ expressive skills as well as knowledge and understanding of dance through performance, choreography and critical appreciation of dance and the Performing Arts.

Students will progress in:

  • Physical fitness, coordination and posture.
  • Knowledge and appreciation for different style of dance.
  • Problem solving, communication skills and working cooperatively in a group.
  • Confidence and self-esteem.
  • Musicality and creativity.

Dance at The Matthew Arnold School is full of energy and enthusiasm with two teachers in the team. Students will learn a range of dance skills to energise them and allow them to develop their creative side.

Year 7

In year 7 students will start to understand the timing skills that are important in dance. They will learn this in a creative and aerobic way to build up their energy and understanding of counting moves to a beat. They will develop this into different skills such as cannon and unison to start to choreograph their own dances. Building from this they will focus on different styles and genres of dance.

Year 8

In year 8 dance skills are developed further with more advanced skills and movements incorporating different themes and sequences of dance. They will also aim to choreograph their own dances both individually and as a team.

Homework

There is no set homework in year 7 and 8 in dance but a dance club runs on a Monday and all students are encouraged to attend.
